Sleight of hand culprit nabbed |

| | | On 19 August 2007 at about 3.15pm, an Iranian man was arrested for an offence of theft by sleight of hand. The man had earlier managed to steal money from foreigners by asking to see their foreign currency. | | On 8 August 2007, a Sri Lankan man in his 30¡¯s lodged a report that his money was stolen after it was handled by the culprit. He had earlier handed over some cash to the culprit who wanted to exchange some foreign currency. | | When the culprit returned the money, he discovered $450/- missing from the bundle of money. | | In a separate incident on 14 August 2007, an Australian man in his 60¡¯s was approached by the same culprit and asked that he wanted to see some Australian currency. | | When the Australian man took out his wallet, the culprit snatched some American dollars and the victim subsequently managed to retrieve it back. After the culprit had left, the man found cash amounting to about US$1,300/- missing. | | With the information from the two victims, Police managed to identify the culprit from the CCTV images from the airport. All the checkpoints were quickly alerted. On 19 August at about 3.15 pm, the culprit was detained as he was trying to leave Singapore via Tuas Checkpoint. | | The 41-year-old man will be charged in Court No. 26 on 21 August 2007 for two counts of Theft under Section 379 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. He will be remanded for further investigations. | | Anyone convicted for the offence of theft will face imprisonment for a term which may extend to 3 years, or with fine, or with both. | | Commander Airport Police Division HQ, Superintendent Teo Chun Ching commended his officers for their tenacity and teamwork that resulted in the arrest.
